Welcome to the first post official launch post of my Substack! Thank you everyone for reading and subscribing, I am externally indebted to all of you, please share with your friends, etc.
You can read my latest article for the Texas Horn, The meaning of Free Speech, here.
We often define free speech merely in legal terms, but a society with legal protection for speech and strong social barriers preventing it from being exercised hardly seems ideal. On the other hand, I do not think a world where no speech carries any consequences is either possible or desirable. In the article I draw the line in the place I think makes the most sense, but I would be interested to hear where other people would draw it. Feel free to leave comments, either down below or on the original article.
For those interested in the reading that made me want to write this article, I would recommend Joseph Pieper’s Abuse of Language, Abuse of Power, which inspired some of the ideas and language in my piece, though I disagree with his conclusions, and Slate Star Codex’s Is it Possible to have Coherent Principles Around Free Speech, which formulates the question I try to answer in my article.
Once Again, the article is The Meaning of Free Speech — The Texas Horn. Thank you all for reading!
